In the wake of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 29, 2025, Malaysia has demonstrated unwavering support in the form of humanitarian aid and specialized search and rescue operations. The earthquake, which severely impacted regions like Mandalay, Bago, and Shan state, has resulted in nearly 2,000 deaths and left thousands more injured or missing. Malaysia, as a responsible member of the ASEAN community, has stepped in to assist in alleviating the crisis.
A 50-member team from the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), under the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), left for Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw on March 30. This highly skilled contingent, led by Senior Superintendent of Fire 1 (PgKB 1) Mohamad Hafiezul Abdul Halim, consists of personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysia Police, and the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM). Their mission is not only to provide immediate rescue and humanitarian aid but also to demonstrate Malaysia’s solidarity with Myanmar during this challenging time.
Despite being far from their families during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, the SMART team remains committed to their task. For PBK I Mohd Idris Hassan, the duty to help those in need outweighs the personal sacrifice of missing family celebrations. “I didn’t hesitate to join the mission, as helping those affected is a priority,” he said, highlighting the personal dedication of the team members. His teammate, PBK II Nik Mohd Farihan Nik Zawawi, is also driven by the same sense of responsibility, with this being his first international mission. Similarly, PB Avlyanie Moidi, the sole female team member, expressed her pride in representing Malaysia on this important mission despite being separated from her family.
In addition to sending the SMART team, Malaysia has pledged RM10 million (approximately US$2.3 million) in humanitarian aid to Myanmar. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in a statement, emphasized Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN Chair in 2025, stating that the country’s efforts reflect its responsibility and solidarity with its neighbors. Anwar also announced the deployment of Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan to lead a humanitarian mission to Myanmar in the coming week, further underscoring Malaysia’s commitment to providing aid and support.
Malaysia’s aid is part of a broader ASEAN initiative, with other countries like Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia mobilizing their resources to assist in the relief efforts.
