Tenures of Past Malaysian Prime Ministers and their Legacies

In light of the recent agreement by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the proposal to lime the tenure of the Prime Minister’s office, it is timely to look back at the history of the Malaysian leadership. Over the years, Malaysia has been led by a series of distinguished figures, each bringing their unique contributions to the nation’s development and progress.

Here is a recap of our past Prime Ministers, highlighting their key achievements and the significant impact they have had on shaping modern Malaysia. 

1.Tunku Abdul Rahman 1957 – 1970)

  • Term: 31 August 1957 – 2 September 1970
  • Party: Alliance Party (later became Barisan Nasional)
  • Notable Achievements: Known as the “Father of Independence”, Tunku Abdul Rahman led Malaysia from British colonial rule. He played a crucial role in the formation of Malaysian in 1963, which included the federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak.

2.Tunku Abdul Razak Hussein (1970 – 1976)

  • Term: 22 September 1970 – 14 January 1976
  • Party: Alliance Party (later became Barisan Nasional)
  • Notable Achievements: Tun Abdul Razak is often referred to as the “Father of Development”. He initiated the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971, aimed at reducing economic disparities between different ethnic groups. He also played a key role in the formation of Barisan Nasional, the ruling coalition that dominated Malaysian politics for decades.

3.Tun Hussein Onn (1976 – 1981)

  • Term: 15 January 1976 – 16 July 1981
  • Party: Barisan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Tun Hussein Onn is known for his efforts to promote national unity and social cohesion. He continued the policies of his predecessor, emphasizing economic development and social harmony.

4.Tun Mahathir Mohamed (1981 – 2003)

  • Term: 16 July 1981 – 31 October 2003
  • Party: Barisan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Dr Mahathir Mohamed is Malaysia’s longest serving Prime Minister. His tenure saw significant economic growth and modernization, often referred to as the “Mahathir era”. He initiated large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Petronas Twin towers and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. He also played a crucial role in Malaysia’s response to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. 

5.Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (2003 – 2009)

  • Term: 31 October 2003 – 3 April 2009
  • Party: Barisan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Known as “Pak Lah”, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi focused on good governance and anti-corruption efforts. He introduced the concept of “Islamic Hadhari” (Civilizational Islam) to promote a progressive and moderate form of Islam.

6.Tun Najib Razak (2009 – 2018)

  • Term: 3 Apr 2009 – 10 May 2018
  • Party: Barisan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Najib Razak implemented various reforms and introduced the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to achieve high income status for Malaysia. However, his tenure was marred by the 1MDB scandal, which lead to his eventual downfall.

7.Tun Mahathir Mohamed (2018 – 2020)

  • Term: 10 May 2018 – 24 February 2020
  • Party: Pakatan Harapan
  • Notable Achievements: Dr Mahathir Mohamed returned to power in 2018 leading the Pakatan Harapan coalition to victory, ending Barisan Nasional’s 61-year rule. His second tenure focused on addressing the 1MDB scandal and implementing various economic and social reforms. 

8.Muhyiddin Yassin (2020 – 2021)

  • Term: 1 March 2020 – 16 August 2021
  • Party: Pakatan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Muhyiddin Yassin became Prime Minister following a political crisis that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government. His tenure was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he implemented various measures to manage the health and economic impacts of the crisis.

9.Dato Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (2021 – 2022)

  • Tenure: 21 August 2021 – 24 November 2022
  • Party: Barisan Nasional
  • Notable Achievements: Ismail Sabri Yaakob took over as Prime Minister following Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation. His tenure focused on continuing COVID-19 recovery efforts and addressing political stability.

10.Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim (2022 – Present)

  • Term: 24 November 2022 – Present
  • Party: Pakatan Harapan
  • Notable Achievements: Anwar Ibrahim became Prime Minister after the 2022 General Election resulted in a hung Parliament. His tenure has focused on economic recovery, political reform, and addressing long-standing issues such as corruption and inequality.
